Program Description:

This video program is designed for RNs who have little or no experience working in a post-anesthesia care unit. This was originally presented as a “live” videoconference program in July, 2000. The content, however, was recently reviewed in 2007. It was deemed that the information presented is current and relevant to practice.

  1. Describe the anatomical and physiologic differences between an adult and a child in terms of their respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

  2. Define pharmacologic considerations to remember when dealing with a pediatric patient.

  3. List four common surgical procedures done on children.

  4. Describe the initial assessment of the pediatric patient in PACU.

  5. Discuss appropriate management of post-operative pain, nausea and vomiting among pediatric patients.

  6. List the discharge criteria used on pediatric patients post-operatively.

  7. Describe alterations in maternal physiology.

  8. Discuss the potential risks of anesthesia and surgery to mom and fetus.

  9. Identify common obstetrical surgical procedures.
