The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) has appointed for the first time in its history, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) to serve on its committee. The appointment of John Nagelhout, CRNA, PhD, FAAN, was made by Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Michael Leavitt. Nagelhout will serve a four-year term until September 2011.

The NACNEP is responsible for providing recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary and U.S. Congress on policy issues pertaining to nurse education, practice improvement and workforce supply. The council is authorized under Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act, which is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of the Health Professions Division of Nursing.

Nagelhout is hopeful to bring a fresh voice, a different point of view, and hope for the future for the advanced practice nursing. His success depends on the success of the greater nursing community. "We have special needs that we have to address in relation to practitioners, midwifes, and CRNA's," he says. He also hopes he can accomplish bringing new ideas and perspective from Kaiser Permanente.

As author, co-author and editor, Nagelhout is responsible for more than 30 publications including the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal and has presented at more than 300 national and international meetings on the topic of anesthesia, research, nursing and pharmacology.

Nagelhout has been a CRNA for 36 years. For the past 11 years, he has been employed with Kaiser Permanente and has held the position of Director of the School of Anesthesia at California State Fullerton, Kaiser Permanente's partner.
