Nursing Pathways Congratulates Nurses on winning the 2007 David Lawrence Community Service Award

Congratulations to all the winners of the 2007 David Lawrence Community Service Award, especially our nurses.

  • Donna Ching, RN , Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Kaiser Permanente Northwest Region, has logged more hours than any other volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank. Her efforts include mentoring children in a gardening program, educating community members about nutrition and, perhaps most impressively, spending up to three hours at a time in the refrigerator of the food bank packaging perishable meals. Ms. Ching not only answers the call to action to end hunger, she also talks to everyone she knows about the issue, recruiting friends and family to join her mission.

  • Jeannie Hickey, RN CDE , Diabetes Care/Insulin Pump Nurse, Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region, has spent countless hours volunteering at the Diabetic Youth Foundation (DYF). She has spent up to four weeks of her vacation time working at DYF's summer camp to help children and young adults with diabetes learn about their condition within a supportive environment. Ms. Hickey is also co-founder of Dogs4Diabetics, an organization that trains and places service dogs for diabetics.

  • Carolyn Rose, LVN , OB-GYN, Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region, co-founded MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) in her garage 37 years ago and build it into the state's ninth largest food bank and a huge multi-service center. Today, MEND has blossomed into a 40,000 square foot multi-service center-the San Fernando Valley's largest poverty agency. Last year alone, MEND provided more than $4.6 million worth of food, $450,000 worth of clothing and $700,000 worth of medical services.

  • Tammy Sabad, BSN RN , Pediatric Nurse Manager, Kaiser Permanente Colorado Region, serves the homeless, uninsured, vulnerable population of Denver through extensive volunteer work for eleven different community charities. Showing tremendous leadership in community service projects, Ms. Sabad has inspired many others to volunteer to help the Colorado Region's most vulnerable populations.
