Kaiser Permanente and the Institute for Business Performance Receive $800,000.00 Grant for Multimedia-Based Nurse Training

San Jose, CA - The San José Evergreen Community College District's (SJECCD) Institute for Business Performance (IBP) has been awarded $800,000 by the State Chancellor's Office to develop multimedia nursing curricula; train six Kaiser Permanente (KP) nurse educators and staff, and up to six community college health care faculty members in simulation pedagogy; and deliver state-of-the-art simulation training to 400 nurses at Kaiser Permanente San Jose. The grant will also fund a simulation lab in the Technology Center at San José City College. KP will provide technical assistance in the development of the curricula and simulation lab.

The grant addresses a quality assurance subject identified by KP San Jose: helping its nurses access state-of-the-art training that reflects their day to day medical experiences. The training will be developed in partnership with KP San Jose's Director of Education, Katherine Ricossa, RN. Project leadership will be provided by Dr. Ingrid Thompson, a project supervisor at IBP, and overseen on a daily basis by a professional nursing expert. The project will create 4 four-hour modules of multimedia training using human simulators capable of 72,000 physiological responses. These simulated scenarios offer reality without risk. Nurses learn in a safe environment how to assess complex medical issues without impacting the well-being of patients.

Carol Coen, Executive Director of IBP says, "We are excited about partnering with Kaiser Permanente San Jose on this innovative project. The Simulation Training Program supports KP's professional development needs and further establish our District as a leader in creating cutting-edge workforce development programs for the health care community in Silicon Valley ." SJECCD Chancellor Rosa Perez notes that " This kind of partnership between education and industry is actually a partnership with our entire community. As we improve the quality of nurse training, we improve the quality of life of our families, seniors, and children."

The Institute's Simulation Training Program will further enhance SJECCD's healthcare education and training programs provided at both the San Jose City College and the Evergreen Valley College campuses . Once the training is developed, this new educational model will be shared with other health care facilities throughout Santa Clara County.

An industry leader , Kaiser Permanente operates in nine states and the District of Columbia and is the largest not-for-profit managed care organization in the United States. Kaiser Permanente San Jose is a full service, 248 licensed-bed hospital with outpatient medical offices. Through Kaiser's existing partnership with Evergreen Valley College's successful nursing program, KP provides ongoing clinical hours to EVC student nurses.

The Institute for Business Performance is the workforce intermediary for the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District and has provided customized training, professional development, skills upgrade training, and employability services to Silicon Valley's businesses and workforce since 1988.

GRAND OPENING
Center for Innovative Medical Simulation [CIMS]

March 14, 2008
Friday, 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Technology Center , San Jose City College

A short program will begin at 2:00, culminating in a symbolic ribbon cutting.

The purpose of the grand opening is to provide the following two messages:

CIMS is the regional go-to community resource for customized medical state-of-the-art simulation training for all levels of health care providers. The training is provided in a "virtual hospital environment" and utilizes realistic human patient simulators to help improve patient safety and quality care.

CIMS is the fruit of a leading-edge partnership between the San Jose Evergreen Community College District and Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, funded through the CA Community Colleges State Chancellor's Office. KP SJMC has provided technical assistance and dedicated time to develop 20 customized simulation scenarios; assisted in the development of the CIMS through donated hospital equipment; and dedicated 25 staff nurses and educators to be trained, along side 7 SJECCD faculty and staff, as simulation specialists. 450 KP SJ staff nurses will be trained in 16 hours of simulation training from March through June 2008 at the CIMS. Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is the first hospital in the nation [and the first internationally] to provide simulation training to over 50% of its nursing staff. This grant project and partnership has created a replicable model for incumbent worker training in health care. We wish to honor the commitment of and partnership with KP SJMC.
