Nursing Pathways

Getting Started: Step Four

Get Started on Prerequisites

There are a variety of ways in which you can complete your prerequisites. Choose the method that best suits your learning style and fits into your life.

  • Face-to-face courses at a Community College
  • Internet courses
  • Televised courses

Please be aware that both LVN and RN prerequisites are different for each school. Be sure to check with the school(s) you plan to apply to in order to make sure you are completing the correct coursework.

Typical LVN Prerequisites:

  • Anatomy and Physiology (see Note below)
  • Math
  • English
  • Child growth and development
  • Psychology
  • Nutrition

Note: The science prerequisites for the LVN program can be fulfilled by taking the designated course for the LVN program, or by taking courses that fulfill both LVN and RN program requirements. Be cautious about taking a combined anatomy and physiology course if your goal is to be an RN. For the RN program, you need to take them as separate one-semester courses, each with a lab.

Typical RN Prerequisites for the Associate Degree:

  • Anatomy (one semester with a lab)
  • Physiology (one semester with a lab)
  • Microbiology (one semester with a lab)
  • College-level Math (beginning algebra)
  • English Composition
  • Psychology
  • Speech
  • Sociology
