Realizing a need for a more concrete subject matter, the
Kaiser Permanente Nursing Leadership Institute expanded to
include a partnership with the Advisory Board Company of Washington,
DC. This partnership provides the next level of support to
further enhance leadership development for the front line
managers of nurses in their roles.
The Kaiser Permanente Nursing Leadership Institute is a joint
endeavor of The Advisory Board Company, Washington, DC and
the Nation’s leading medical centers.
The purpose of the partnership is to build the leadership
rank in American Nursing. Although the Board serves the entire
nursing leadership team, the focus of the Nursing Leadership
Academy's curriculum and services is designed primarily to
serve the educational needs of front-line managers. In partnership
with The Advisory Board Company, Kaiser Permanente launched
the KP Nursing Leadership Institute in 2002, elevating the
performance of front-line manager of nurses across the continuum
within Kaiser Permanente.
The proposed institute curriculum addresses concerns about
the growing gap between the responsibilities and the skills
of nurse managers at the front-lines of patient care. The
Academy curriculum focuses on topics that are directly applicable
to the day-to-day work of front-line nursing leaders such
as Setting Goals and Motivating Staff, Leading Change, Emerging
Leaders, Evaluating the Health of Your Unit Department, Problem
Solving and Innovation, and Leading Nursing Through Vision.
This is a multi-year endeavor. To date approximately 800
managers from Northern California have participated in the
offerings of the Kaiser Permanente Nursing Leadership Institute.
The Academy’s agenda includes a 360 degree feedback
survey, Management Intensive, “Breakthrough Leadership”
and series of competency-based curriculums.
