Students Conducting Research
Policy
All nursing students, (whether employed by Kaiser Permanente or not) who ask to conduct research at Kaiser Permanente as part of their degree requirements must submit a complete research proposal to the Northern California Nursing Research Program prior to sending the research application to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval. IRB approval is necessary prior to beginning any research study activities at Kaiser Permanente.
Purpose
Protect the rights and privacy of all Kaiser Permanente staff and its members. Protect the confidentiality of Kaiser Permanente data. Facilitate students in meeting the regulatory requirements for conducting research.
Procedure
1. Responsibilities of all students:
1.1. Prior to submitting a research proposal to the IRB for approval all students must:
1.1.1. Submit a complete research proposal to the nursing research program for review
1.1.2. Complete HIPAA training for research located on the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute web site under training
1.1.3. Complete a Protecting Human Research Participants online
1.1.4. Obtain a letter from their school identifying:
1.1.4.1. The course requirement the research project fulfills
1.1.4.2. The name of the school and the department
1.1.4.3. The name and contact information of the faculty advisor
1.1.4.4. The expected date of completion
1.1.4.5. A copy of any previous IRB approval
1.2. After Nursing Research approves the research proposal all students must:
1.2.1. Submit the complete research proposal to the IRB for review
1.2.2. Present the proposal at the IRB monthly meeting
1.3. After IRB approval all students must:
1.3.1. Conduct the study as approved by the IRB
1.3.2. Submit reports and documents to the IRB on time such as progress reports, modification requests and adverse events reports.
1.4. Upon completion of the research study
1.4.1. Send the final report to the IRB
1.4.2. Send a copy of the final report to the Nursing Research Program
2. Additional Responsibilities of non-employee students:
2.1. Obtain a sponsor (co-principal investigator) who is an employee of Kaiser Permanente
2.2. Sign a confidentiality agreement with Kaiser Permanente
