Process for CPR Certification for Selected Kaiser Permanente Employees

  • BCLS, ACLS and PALS renewal training is offered at no charge through our preferred vendor, MediTrain, to Kaiser Permanente and OPMG employees, only if maintaining certification is a specified job requirement for an employee's primary position.

  • In accordance with the American Heart Association (AHA), only a valid card will be honored to participate in any renewal class and must be presented for admission to the class. An employee who has allowed his/her card to lapse must make arrangements to complete and pay for a 'new' certification class.

  • Employees should make note of the renewal dates on their current cards and enroll in a class not more than two months in advance of that date, unless directed otherwise by Human Resources or their manager.

  • If certification requirements on a job description are listed as "due upon hire," the employee is notified that he or she must provide a valid American Heart Association card prior to start of employment.

  • Certain job descriptions may stipulate that employees are given a specific timeframe after hire in which to become certified or recertified (e.g., ACLS within six months of hire). In such cases, the employee may enroll in an available class at the organization's expense.

Manager Approval

Most managers pre-approve staff time away for a class as our coordinator does not monitor enrollments for manager approval. Employees should consult their managers if they have any questions about time away.

When to Take Classes

Kaiser Permanente plans class offerings around anticipated renewal needs. Taking a class too far in advance may cause other employees to be closed-out of a class they need during that time frame. While this happens infrequently, we reserve the right to deny a class to anyone presenting too far in advance of scheduled renewal date and recommend not taking a class more than two months in advance of the expiration date of that AHA certification.

Where to Take Classes

Meditrain offers classes both on-site at several Kaiser facilities and at its Akron location. Look at the schedule of upcoming classes to find the most convenient location and time.

Textbooks

New textbooks are required for all classes. You must have the book with you to participate in class. If you need to borrow a new textbook, CD or any other class materials, contact Kellie L. Morris via Lotus Notes at Kellie.L.Morris@kp.org. Allow for 2 business days to process your request. Textbooks are no longer available at the Parma Medical Library.

Pre-work

The AHA has established stringent pre-course preparation requirements for ACLS. A required pre-test is included on the CD on the inside cover of the new textbook. It is an interactive program and must be completed on a computer with a printer.
