The Deloras Jones RN Scholarship Program offers two scholarships. Both need and merit-based scholarships are available to students across California. Need-based scholarships of $1,000-2,500 are offered to students enrolled in approved nursing degree programs in California; in addition, a limited number of $5,000 merit-based scholarships will be awarded to Kaiser Permanente employees pursuing a BSN degree.
Scholarships funding is provided by Kaiser Permanente's Community Benefit program.
Applications for the need-based scholarships have been mailed to all BRN-approved nursing programs in California, and can be downloaded from the Scholarship America Web site.

The Program
The program will be called the Kaiser Permanente Deloras Jones RN Scholarship Program.
The sponsor will be Kaiser Permanente.
Two types of scholarships are available ?
- Merit Awards - Excellence in Bachelor Degree Nursing
- Need-based Awards
Merit Awards - Excellence in Bachelor Degree Nursing
(for Employees Only)Eligibilities
Applicants must ?
- be current benefit eligible (minimum of 20 hours/week) Kaiser Permanente employees who have completed a minimum of one year of employment or the equivalent (at least 2080 hours) as of the application deadline date,
- be United States citizens or have permanent Visa status,
- be enrolled in a BRN approved Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in California ,
- have completed at least one academic term (semester/quarter or its equivalent) of nursing program coursework including at least one clinical nursing course by August 31, 2008 ,
- have a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in nursing program coursework,
- expect to graduate no earlier than November 30, 2008 .
Previous recipients of the Kaiser Permanente Deloras Jones RN Scholarship Program are ineligible to apply.
Awards
- The evaluation and ranking of applications will consider the following ?
- Grade point average in nursing courses,
- Statement of educational/professional goals and their relationship to role as a current or future Kaiser Permanente registered nurse,
- Demonstrated commitment to leadership, education, and excellence in nursing practice, and
- Length of employment at Kaiser Permanente.
Scholarship Management Services will evaluate and rank all applicants. Kaiser Permanente will review rankings, all related forms and select recipients.
Awards of $5,000 each will be granted.
Awards are for education related expenses and are one-time only.
Financial need will not be considered.
Need-Based Awards
Eligibilities
Applicants must ?
- be United States citizens or have permanent Visa status,
- be enrolled in a California BRN approved Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), entry-level Master of Science in Nursing (MSN/MN) program,
- or be a California resident (residing in Northern or Southern California) enrolled in a CCNE accredited post-graduate Master of Science in Nursing (MSN/MN or Doctoral Program in Nursing (PhD/DNSc/DNP), (applicants enrolled in an accredited non-nursing doctoral program will be considered if they have an MSN/MN degree),
- have completed at least one academic term (semester/quarter or its equivalent) of nursing program coursework including at least one clinical nursing course by August 31, 2008 ,
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of (on a 4.0 scale):
- 3.8 ? Academic Excellence Graduate/Doctoral Studies
Registered nurses pursuing as MSN , MN , DNSc, PhD, DNP or other qualified doctoral program if the applicant has an MSN/MN degree prior to enrollment.
- 3.8 ? Academic Excellence Pre-licensure
Students enrolled in CA BRN approved ADN, BSN, or entry-level MSN program or RN-to-BSN nursing studies.*
- 3.0 ? Graduate/Doctoral Studies
Registered nurses pursuing a MSN, MN, DNSc, PhD, DNP or other qualified doctoral program if the applicant has an MSN/MN degree.
- 2.5 ? Affiliate Schools
Must have completed a minimum of one clinical nursing course and must be currently enrolled with a school that sends students to a Kaiser Permanente facility for clinical rotations.
- 2.5 ? Underrepresented Group in Nursing
Ethnic minority and male student
- expect to graduate no earlier than November 30, 2008 .
LVN and NP certificate programs are not eligible.
Kaiser Permanente employees are eligible; however, Kaiser Permanente employment is not required and preference is not given to employees.
Awards
- The evaluation and selection of recipients will be based primarily on financial need.
- Scholarship Management Services will evaluate and rank all applicants by level of expected financial contribution. ( Scholarship Management Services standard suggested parent/self contribution (SPC) calculation will be used to determine level of contribution.)
- Kaiser Permanente will review rankings and select recipients.
- Scholarships will be awarded in the following categories if there are qualified applications and adequate funding is available:
- Academic Excellence in Graduate/Doctoral Studies
- Academic Excellence ? Associate Degree students in pre-licensure (students enrolled
- in BRN approved ADN, BSN, or entry-level MSN program) or RN-to-BSN nursing studies
- Graduate Studies (registered nurses pursuing a MSN, MN, DNSc, PhD or DNP) or
- qualified doctoral program if the applicant has a MSN/MN.
- Affiliate Schools (schools that send clinical rotation students to Kaiser Permanente
- facilities)
- Underrepresented Groups in Nursing (ethnic minority and male students)
- Need-based Awards will be granted as follows
- $2,500 - Academic Excellence in Graduate/Doctoral Studies
- $2,000 - Academic Excellence
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) students
- $2,500 - Graduate Studies ? Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or entry-level Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Graduate Studies (registered nurses pursuing advanced degrees, such as MSN , MN , and doctoral programs.
- $1,000 - Affiliate Schools
- TBD - Underrepresented Groups in Nursing ? award amount will be based on the nursing program in which the applicant is enrolled in.
Applicants may apply in more than one category, but can only be awarded one scholarship.
Awards are for education related expenses and are one-time only.
Previous recipients of this program are ineligible to apply.
The authorized distribution for Need-based Awards is determined annually. Approximately 160 awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 will be granted.

Applications have been sent to all BRN-approved nursing programs in California. Materials must be submitted to contacts at the schools and are usually due in mid-late March (students should check with their school's nursing department or financial aid office for exact deadlines).
